Not really anything like other vintages of the Bonterra Zinfandel I've tried, this has some feint aromas of black fruit but there is a slightly saltiness too. There is an alcoholic heat to the flavour which overtakes the fruit which is, just about, there on the finish.

85% saturated ruby red with a thin, clear rim. 30 min in glass. With severe agitation and near hyper-ventilation, I can coax a slight aroma of anise, raspberry, and a little kirsch out of this. With that mediocre setup of a bouquet, I'm not very optomistic. And that's good, because the flavor also leaves much to be desired. It's attack is hot, harsh and astringent with a somewhat green finish. The fruit taste IS somewhat akin to Zinfandel, but there's little resemblence to fine wine. I guess I could say there's not "enough there, there" and also some things that shouldn't be there, there. Note that i don't score this as "avoid", just below average. I don't know what it costs but I guess it has it's place - on the bottom shelf(4+7+10+4) = 75

Raspberry, red cherry and a little clove character on the nose. The palate shows dark berry fruit, spice, white pepper and well integrated oak. Fine grained tannins and nice long finish.

Quite tannic and off putting at first. However I could taste a hint of the subtle jammi-ness trying to make it's way through the in your face tannins. It did open up (slightly) after breathing. Maybe it's past it's prime?

Better the second time around. The key was to let it decant for 2 hours.
