  • 2006 Retrospective (Central Coast, CA): Fresh and showing plenty of energy, with a petrol-dominated, slightly floral nose (it was served bling alongside some Rieslings) and honeyed pears on the palate. Good tension.

  • -- cracked and poured --
    -- tasted non-blind over 2 – 3 hours --

NOSE: pleasantly tertiary; reminds me of LdH or other traditional Viura; hint of very ripe pineapple; rubber tubing note and slight woodsy tone.

BODY: light maize color; medium bodied.

TASTE: a bit oxidative; 13.5% alc. is moderately noticeable on taste; definitely tastes aged; hint of petrol; dry; I've always enjoyed this wine, and still find it nice to this day. That said, I do believe it's best to Drink Now, as the fruit is falling away leaving mineral and alcohol behind.

  • On opening I wondered if this had oxidized too much, but after a couple minutes it was evident that it was in great shape. Rounded acidity, lemon, custard, a hint of nuttiness, and overall just delicious. I didn't know this variety could age like this. Kudos to Larry!

  • Nose: It has an almost whiskey-esque quality to the nose at first that intermingles with notes of honey and petrol. There is a little bit of a whiter fruit aspect as well. Maybe pear, or it could be very faint hints of honeysuckle.

Palate: Strong flavors of honey that are accentuated by the oily, creamy mouthfeel. After a few hours it becomes less "organic" and adds flavors of pear and Granny Smith apples.

Finish: Still had plenty of acid left to give it a lift and bring out the apple and pear on the backend.

Thoughts: While some might think a 9 year old grenache blanc would be long dead, this wine is far from it. After a few hours the petrol and more "solventy" notes blew off allowing the white fruit to "wake up" and the wine to shed years of age. While this is not a bottle I'm going to sit down by myself and knock out over the course of a night, it's definitely one I would open with a group of friends to discuss and enjoy the evolution of over the course of a long evening.

  • Needs to breath just a bit. Notes of petrol, melon, honeysuckle, new cardboard, wheat, faint lemon zest. Pleasantly oily in the front of the mouth, nice long finish, mineral. Drink now. Fairly muted aromas - don't overpower it. Think this would go very well with white fish.
