Awesome wine, in a great spot right now where the fruit's still incredibly sappy and youthful, but there's already some noticeable savoury character with earthy, leathery, and faint underbrush notes framing the fruit. There's still a fair bit of grainy tannin on the back end, but despite that this still has a remarkably graceful, elegant palate presence.
Mourvedre (TTTG blind tasting): This may have been the wine of the night by volume consumed. On open, medium ruby (surprisingly light), wild meaty nose with cherry liquor; huge, exuberant, HOT attack, with a chest-warming aperitif-like finish. Over ten hours, very rich, silky mouthfeel. Chocolate-like, licorice body. Ripe tannin, but with plenty of life. Quite good.
Only a sip remained the next day, but this continued to impress, with a perfumed aroma and silky mouthfeel. Would certainly hold.
Third Thursday blind tasting group - Mourvedre's (Mike's) (11/20/2014): Loved this. Really complex and savoury already, even though the intensity of the fruit and tannin suggests this is still very young. A core of bright red fruit framed by earthy, leathery, gamey and other savoury flavours, and a graceful, medium weight palate presence up front, though the grainy tannin makes its presence felt on the back end. This kept getting more fragrant and complex with air, and I imagine it'll be quite remarkable with more cellar time.
