  Dark in the glass and just a touch opaque, this wine offered explosive aromatics of baking spices, tea leaves, cherry preserves, citrus zest, grass compost, leather and smoke. Clearly from the nose, this was a mature wine. In the mouth it was surprisingly concentrated but tight and a bit clipped. Jeff described the taste as “tart and short.” In part, I believe this was because the wine was initially served cool and without any aeration. After about half an hour in the glass, the wine started taking on weight and did so for another couple of hours. When I revisited this wine about two hours later, it was beautiful, a combination of dark and tart cherry fruit, smooth, with nice acidity and a lingering finish. The nose was still the king, though, with this wine, and one person went on to describe it as “a hundred point nose.” Personally, I would not care to argue with that.
