So here's the pleasure of wine: It lives, changes, and surprises. This has gotten better in the last eight months, and it was already pretty great. It's rounded out a bit, so it's more Cornas or Cote Rotie than St. Joseph, but the acids are still pretty vibrant. I do agree that the Cardiac Hill vineyard is spot on for Syrah, and I'd happily search more of this out.

Throwing a ton of sediment at this point, but it's amazing wine. There's ample fruit, a crunch of acid to keep it fresh, and complex savory flavors from all over the map. I don't think it's got a ton longer, so it's fine that I have only one more bottle. I don't think it ages like Bill Easton's Terre Rouge wines, but it's a big pleasure at 12 years old. More St. Joseph than Hermitage, but at the top of that class. Food friendly as hell. But why am I writing this? I cornered the remaining market, pretty sure, and neither the reader nor I will have another chance to buy.

A crazy and stunning turnaround over 24 hours. Poured into a decanter on night one and this was shy aromatically and hard as nails on the palate -- you could smell/taste the potential but the texture was all acid and clenched tight fruit. Three hours in the decanter and not much improvement ... back into the bottle overnight and popped the following evening for dinner. Holy smokes -- what a different wine! First, there is awesome complexity and depth with dark savory fruit, green olives, loads and loads of cracked black pepper and leathery, earthy notes. Second, the palate has plush fleshy black fruit with moderate acidity and layers of nuanced pepper, earth and game flavors. Lingering, peppery and sweet black fruit finish. Just terrific stuff. Hold for 5 more years or plan on a serious decant. I am a believer in the Cardiac Hill terroir.

It's been almost two years to the day since I last had this and noted a strong oak presence then. On this day I decanted for 1 hour and drank over 3. Strong nose of fresh asphalt and heat. Palate is very rich dark fruit, some iron notes and small woodsy bitter note on the finish. I wonder if the woodsy note that put me off the last time I had this and seems much more manageable this go around might be the stem inclusion? This is a big rich wine that although isn't something I reach for all that often anymore is drinking just fine now. Nice example of higher octane Bennett Valley Syrah.

Killer juice that is certainly ready to drink but also has the potential to improve and will certainly hold for at least five more years. The more wine I drink from Cardiac Hill and more I like it.
