Got another bottle from Fairways wine Vault in Naples today. Their wine is always stored so good. The bottles are always better from there. Cork was hard as could be. No seepage from the cork at all. This 87 was unlike any I have had. Almost no musty notes what so ever. The Raspberry finish last for 45+ seconds. I would never had guessed this was an 87 Mondavi if I didn't pull it from the bottle myself. More power than any of the other 87's Mondavi's I have had. Ill take another case please.
Not as good as the one I drank at Robert Mondavi winery but still pretty good. Upon opening this had loads of bell pepper and olives. It settled down a little with in 30-45 minutes. Very soft and well integrated. Light and easy to drink. Very low alcohol. Lots of sediment.
Monday at Domaine (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): Had nice aromas of cherries, dark spices, blackberries, & earth. Had a lot of bell pepper on the nose, too. The palate was feminine and airy, but with good concentration of flavor. Lots of berries, earth, green beans/bell pepper, & earth. Love these older Mondavi Reserves. This was a great example.
I have had this wine 12 times over the years. It started with a Bordeaux nose, some tabacco, earth notes and light fruits. A very good wine for its age. That being said, the last three times followed a similar pattern of fading fast once poured and distinct old wine "bricking". RP called it a 25-30 year wine and I think that is right on target. Drink over the next few years while still enjoyable.
A bit past its prime. There are terrific herbal Cabernet flavors mixed with a wet earth element that are pure and impressive. The finish is a bit rough and I think this was something very special 5 to 10 years ago. Not dead by any means but on the decline. (90)
