(BRICCO Barolo VAJRA) 2004 Barolo Dear Friends, For those of you unfamiliar with Vajra, 2004 would be a very good year to make their acquaintance. G.D. Vajra represents one of the last price/quality over-achievers left in Barolo. Their top-end example, Bricco della Viola, can rival anything in Piedmont year in and year out. Considering the quality of the fruit, this is one of Barolo's finest representations under $50, especially compared to the other top-tier producers in the region. In a blind tasting, many of you would place this wine at or near the top of the best 2004s (including examples such as Cascina Francia, et al). The 2004 is yet to be reviewed by the WA but Antonio Galloni gave the 2003 Bricco della Viola 94pts so you can use your imagination as to the quality of the 2004, from one of the finest overall vintages in memory (the 2004 is also up in price commensurate with the vintage)... We also have a very small parcel of the captivating Barolo Chinato, a bursting, exotic and spice-filled dessert wine (produced from Nebbiolo) that will wake up the senses. This wine is not easy to make - it is quite special and Vajra is justifiably proud of it. A desert offering that will rival even the great Abbesses from Bourdy (they are made in a similar, wild spice style) - it has legs to burn and an aromatic that is a mix of alpine herbs, underbrush and high-toned dark fruit that slathers the palate with a cacophony of flavor. As an aside, an open bottle left outside in the cool nights of northern France has lasted almost two weeks without degradation (I've also toted it around in my car, rattling around with no ill effects). Sumptuous, coating and very memorable, Vajra's Chinato is made in small batches to highlight the fruit - it is worth the search to obtain. If you yearn for the unknown and for wine that few in your tasting group have ever seen, this delivers a wallop of excitement and flavor for a very fair price. Both are VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - directly from the winery cellar at about the same tariff as in Alba (or even less): 2004 Vajra Barolo "Bricco della Viole" NV Vajra Barolo Chinato Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy5255 Italy5260
