  • This is a slight disappointment for me, a big fan of Philippe Foreau's wines. According to my CT inventory, my very good bottle drunk in 2015 was my last, but this turned up in the place of a missing 2004 when I was relocating my stock. In the intervening years, I think this wine, from a moderately rated Loire vintage IIRC, seems to have lost bloom and complexity while not showing strong signs of age related "off" flavours or oxidation. The nose was quite shy with typical antique wax notes but not much quince or other fruit and floral aroma. The palate was linear in shape, crisp and well focused with a follow through of the aromas from the nose but with less underlying roundness than I was expecting. Perhaps the pairings of barbue fish with spicy vegetable preparations followed by overripe goat cheese obscured the wine's finer points. Still good nevertheless and this time it really was my last bottle.

  • Even better than the previous bottle in terms of tension, aromatic expression and length on the palate with superb beeswax and quince notes integrated with juicy acidity. Very good but alas my last bottle.

  • After bottles of Foreau's '00 and '02 secs which were more evolved than I like, it is good to report that this '01 was as fresh as I was expecting. At first the nose and medium bodied linear and dry palate were a little reticent with lively acidity, saline minerality, backbone and notes of wax and quince but gradually with air and slight warming the wine became more complex and expressive adding floral notes and a slight note on the finish reminiscent of botrytis (though that is hardly possible in a sec and is quite rare in Vouvray even with moelleux). Good with omble chevalier (a deep lake fish of the trout family) and superb with Selles-sur-Cher goat cheese. It might benefit from decanting.

  • Superbe !

Probably pass its time.
