  12.5% alcohol. Solid red color, with no bricking at the rim of the glass. This is in a very pretty spot right now. Cool nose of spice box, cigar, black currant fruit, and a masculine, almost meaty note. In the mouth, balanced and classic expression of St. Estephe, with black fruit, a spicy and tobacco-laced background, good earthy notes, and good backbone. Balanced and pure, this was still showing some brawny strength. Drinking beautifully. A-

  Crown Fall 08 Upscale Tasting (Boca Raton, FL): Was very closed with little fruit behind the tannin and acidity. Surprising for the generally early drinking 01 vintage. Needs a few more years before ready, and is still questionable that there is enough fruit here.

  (From magnum) Very tight, fruit overshadowed by tannins, a little dried out. Became more approachable over the evening, but the experience on the palate never approached the fragrant promise of the nose. On reflection this bottle was broached too early: this is a rather backward wine which could have done with another 2-3 years to sort itself out.

  Decanted in restaurant. Appearance - clear as a bell, dark core but starting to show a tiny bit of fading on the rim. Nose - peppers, earth, restrained dark fruit. Taste: tannins really at the front of this wine although they were fine grained and sat well within the context of the wine - there is definately some complexity here but it is almost overwhelmed by the gripping tannins and earthyness of the wine. A dry finish. Having said that, this is a great wine to go with food - really balanced off well against the duck I was eating. I quite liked this, but I think some more bottle time would certainly help this wine lose a little bit of those tannins. Overall very good.
