  Jadot (and Clair Dau) Chapelle-Chambertin Dinner with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago IL): In Jadot Chapelle flight. Big black fruit, just still firm and tannic. Lots here, but not the most composed vintage of this wine. I have had this wine many times, and this vintage never thrilled me.

  Annual Jadot Dinner - this time with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago): 96/97/02 flight. My least favorite of the three as it wasn't totally harmonious with a slight structural edge that isn't completely integrated. On its own, I might not have picked up on the relative imbalance but next to the more complete 97 and 02, it was noticeable. Very good, none the less.

  Jim & Michelene's 40th Anniversary Dinner (Jim and Michelene's Place, St. Paul, MN): Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes plus. Great nose with funky leather, dried flowers and spices, dried cherry, graphite. The palate shows lovely juicy cherry and tart raspberries, leather, forest floor, and minerals. Medium bodied, sleek tannins and nicely balanced. In a super spot.

  [Tasted Double Blind] This pours light ruby in the glass with little bricking. The nose shows massive rich and optimally ripe dark cherry, followed up with sweet cedar, mushroom, dried ground ginger, decaying rose petal, moss, mustard seed, and nutty oak. The palate enters on the deep and rich cherry with medium acid and medium plus bright acid. The finish is lovely with the deep rich cherry while also very structured. Quite a nice wine. I figured this was Burgundy, yet one that was more meaty and structured. I tossed around thoughts of 2007, 2001, 2000, 1999 or 1996, in the end landing on 1er Gevrey from 1996 which turned out to be quite a good guess. Overall I was quite impressed with this. Above my expectations for the bottle despite having had it right around a year ago. While not terribly complex, the purity of fruit and freshness is undeniable here.

  This pours light ruby in the glass. The nose is expressive and very Gevrey, but almost some Bordeaux-like elements too. This is fairly expressive from the get go, but does open a little over several hours. The nose is of cigar box, dark cherry, plum, mulberry, celery seed, dried ginger, and light woodsy/musky spice. The palate feels fairly youthfully structured, entering on rich plummy fruit, turning to medium tannin and medium acid. The finish replays the deep fruit and woodsy spice of the nose. Just a touch of astringency shows up right at the tail end here. All in all this is a nice, lightly mature bottle of red burgundy. Doesn’t quite live up to the Grand Cru status, but still an enjoyable bottle. I’d be interested to see this with 5 - 10 years more of bottle age.
