At Boston Wine & Poker, Needham, July 17, 2022: (Tasted blind) This is unmistakably an aged cabernet, but, given its power, I thought it was Californian. Impressively robust for a 40-year old cru bourgeois.

Coravin fun - Older Bordeaux mini-taste (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Initially a little cellar stink which blows off to show leathery black fruits, sweet spice, porcini, wet earth; quite Autumnal notes. In the mouth it's dense, a little sour, brambly fruits, like the Cos Labory the tannins are fully resolved, a little alcohol warmth on the slightly short finish. Drink up for me on this taste.

Tasted against 1993 Penfolds Grange, 1988 Cullens Cabernet, 1988 Lindemans St George, and other distinguished reds, this was a standout. Lovely cassis, tobacco, vanilla and tea chest on the nose, it was perfectly balanced, long, medium bodied with tasty fruit and a hint of dusty tannins. The consensus gave the wine at least another decade of good life. This has been a bargain Bordeaux for many decades and often outperforms the classed growths.

Matt’s 40th Party (Fallsington, PA): no expectations. Clearly past peak but surprisingly drinkable, some fruit, loads of tertiaries, not a drinker, but late night a good 9th 82 bottle.

From Coravin. Left this about 40 minutes in glass before approaching. Cellar stink, mushroom, forest floor, damp leaves...the palate is a little more vibrant; ripe black and red currant, touch of bramble, mushroom, forest floor, leathery near resolved tannins have a touch of talc texture. Long. Yum.
