This wine is still drinking beautifully for a 17 year old wine, especially at this price point. Tons of dark ripe fruit still present while the tannins have become more integrated over the years. Sad I’m down to the last bottle.

From a pristinely cellared bottle, this opaque ruby wine (100% Syrah) was decanted off of its sediment and serially sampled over a four-hour period. The wine's fruit remains every bit as prominent as it was when last tasted nearly five years ago, but the tannins and oak have further integrated, conferring a degree of elegance that was previously lacking. Black cherries, dark bramble fruits, smoky bacon and bittersweet chocolate continue to reside in a full-bodied frame that now has no rough edges. Solid on the mid-palate and long on the back end, this will last longer than previously projected. Comparably cellared bottles should reach their twentieth birthday with grace. Drink now-2026.

(Luca Syrah Laborde Double Select, Uco Valley, Mendoza) Named after Laura Catena’s son, Luca, and in honor of grower Luis Laborde’s double massale Syrah selection from the Rhône Valley, this concentrated red shows aromas of blueberry, cherry, raspberry, vanilla, and earth. It’s soft and creamy on the palate, with bright-berry, earth, and tar notes and slightly gripping oak tannins. Special Report: Argentina
