Light straw, still looking young. Energetic bouquet, fresh citrus, mealy creaminess smoke and stone. This smells mature and puts me in mind of a Chablis Le Clos I had in Troyes in 2018. This has plenty of oomph in the mouth. Green apple, lemon provide the acid spine on which we get that smokey/flinty edge, green apple, caramelised apple, a certain roundness which I describe as cream, fennel seed and smoke. This is powerful, long and while obviously mature doesn’t feel in the slightest bit tired. I did wonder if I’d left this too long but it’s got plenty left before it slips into the extra mature category. Real treat to drink. Big score and worthy of it.

Hard to believe this is 12 years old. Very, very, very good and will show up many Burgundies at twice the price. Very rich and oaky and nutty and complex. I would say middle aged: few mature notes but lacking some freshness too. I think it’s much lower in acidity than the hunting hill or mates vineyard or many burgundies from say 2008 or 2010. It’s like a very ripe vintage in Burgundy, a 2009. Great with seared salmon and brin de Paille cheese. Great also on its own. Sadly the last of 6 bottles but I still have some hunting hill and mates of the same vintage to look forward to. After this I went back to a Pommery 2006. It was very good earlier but after the Kumeu it tasted plain, tart and like a crement. Not remotely champagne like, except maybe a touch on the finish. Interesting and shows the richness of the Kumeu River.

Compared against a 2010, this seemed more balanced but think it's nearing the end of its apogee. Subtle oak, well integrated, good acidity: almost chablis like. Clearly Kumeu can keep for 10-12 years.

We had this wine with a group of a steamed Barossa Shiraz, and it held up very very well. Buttery rich Chardonnay, a great compliment to the big reds.

Seriously. This is packing a lot of flavor, light hay color, delicious on the palate, good finish, good acidity, happy to have bought so many.
