  • Tom brought this for wine industry dinner. Really interesting and reminded me more of a lighter Sauternes. Mostly because of the saffron on the nose and the rich flavors.
    Color was golden.

I was expect something dryer with more acidity so didn’t connect to this one as much.

  • An auction purchase. First made in 1991, the M stands for monumental. The grapes are sourced from the Loibenberg vineyard and a strict selection of the best grapes from some of the estates other top sites. The grapes are normally harvested 2 weeks after their other top wines to provide concentration and richness. Opened an hour before serving but not decanted. Medium yellow color. This wine was paired with our salad course before the leg of lamb I smoked. It was rich and loaded with white fruit notes. The acidity was on the lower side but the wine was holding up very well. Long finish. 93 points.

  • Big, a bit ponderous, rich fruit. Soft acids at this point. A darkening yellow color.

  • oily, waxy, full bodied and rich. High alcohol but quite reserved in style. Acidity on low side but smooth and not heavy, good to pair with sushi.

  • The contrast between the opulence of flavor and rich oily texture on one side and lightness and almost airy clean on the palate. Quince, honey, orange zest, light spice and very fine botrytis. 14% alcohol is palpable but well integrated, the wine is compact and very well balanced. Ageless and unique.

(F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M') Harvested in early December, 70% from Loibner Berg, 30% from the southeast-facing Dürnsteiner Kellerberg vineyard. Straw color with greenish-gold highlights. Notes of slate, melon, apple, and pepper, combined with more exotic peach and mango aromas from the Kellerberg. Full-bodied, viscous mouthfeel. Garagiste

(FX PICHLER M Gruner) 1971 Dear Friends, This is one of the rarest wines in Austria and it has just been released from the winery cellar after resting for the better part of 40 years. If you desire the most collectible examples with the best provenance, it doesn't get any better than this (from an Austrian standpoint, that is). The ultimate Kirchmayr, this Solist bottling (the library collection we've highlighted in the past) hails from Neusiedlersee, land of some of the world's most famous sweet wines (Alois Kracher, etc). What makes this wine so unique is that it is botrytis affected (like the top dessert wines) but the Kirchmayr is dry - think Clos St. Hune meets 1959 Huet and you will be close. 1971 was a vintage that needs no introduction - it still ranks for many as the single most famous vintage of the last century in Germany and also in Austria. From this stored year, The 1971 Neuburger has evolved into an elegant lolly and sap filled delight - everything has harmonized and the elements are floaty and nearly weightless despite the obvious extract of the wine. The complex, dry and feminine finish lasts for minutes on the palate - you don't need to drink this with food - it is the food. This wine is approaching its 40th birthday and that amazes me. Still youthful in color, the charm of this style will captivate the most ardent collector and lover of fine wine (even my mom likes it - she's drinking it right now as I write this - happy birthday mom!). A wine for a special night when a beverage of class and refined style are the order of the day. A classic example of how wine ages in a completely different manner if it has done so at the winery cellar (versus anywhere else). You just can't duplicate this level of provenance and it shows. One of a kind. EXTREMELY LIMITED - only five cases released from the winery (for the world, not just us): 1971 Kirchmayr Neuburger Neusiedlersee "Solist" Konig Altwein 700ml (Austria) (even if you see listings for this in the US, I doubt they actually have the wine) ...we also just received these: 2007 FX Pichler Gruner Veltliner "M" Smaragd EXTREMELY LIMITED 2007 FX Pichler Gruner Veltliner "Kellerberg" Smaragd EXTREMELY LIMITED Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Austr2000 Austr2100 Austr2300
