  • Deep golden brown colour. A restrained nose at first but lime citrus and hints of sherry began to develop over an hour or so. The palate was also closed when first poured but the lime citrus fruit gradually emerged. Dry, complex and rich with fine acidity and superb (mainly lime) length - it lingered for minutes. Some dry Seville orange marmalade character (no sweetness) with attractive, subtle apricot stone and Amontillado. There was absolutely no unpleasant oxidation. It softened noticeably as it opened and warmed (it needed at least an hour) and was lovely on its own. However, it was a very good partner to a smoked poached salmon stir fry and at least as good an hour later. A great experience for those who like old Semillon.
    Not a wine that will please everybody but we found it fascinating and very well worth giving time to age. It still has life but, sadly, it is our last bottle of the '98.
    Next day, a sample stored in the fridge overnight was, if anything, even better. The nose had citrus reminiscent of lemon curd. It was softer but still full of character. Superb.

  • Bright, deep golden colour. Fragrant citrus nose with petrol. Attractive lime and lemon citrus palate with delicate 'marmalade' notes and superbly balanced, mouth-watering, acidity. Ripe but not sweet. Memorably long on the palate. Wonderful on its own and also with baked salmon. Fantastic wine - inexpensive when I bought it 15 years ago. I am really glad I took (what I thought was) a risk and cellared it until now. I have since talked to Clare Valley winemakers who love aged Semillon and it is a taste well worth acquiring IMO. It still has life. 93+
