Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 7 notes)

Tasted by winotoo on 5/9/2009 & rated 90 points: Pre-Mother's Day dinner at Montecito Cafe. Some bricking at edges. Still a nice bouquet and flavor but may have peaked and started down the back side. Drink up. (220 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 3/18/2009 & rated 88 points: Burgundy OL (Twist Bistro, Campbell, California): Bricking light medium red color with clear meniscus; brett, ripe cherry nose; brett on palate with stewy ripe cherry, framboise, green notes and acidified; medium finish (poured blind, but I could pick it out immediately, having had it a few times before) (339 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 3/16/2009 & rated 89 points: SF Dinner for Jonathan Dinh's Visit (Lupa Trattoria, San Francisco, California): Medium raspberry color with pale meniscus; brett, ripe strawberry, cherry and berry nose; bretty, tart cherry and strawberry palate with extra lemon acidity (acidified?), rendering it disjointed; medium finish (321 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 1/26/2009 & rated 90 points: David Niederauer Monday Wine Dinner - Yquem, Burgundies, SQNs, Massandra (The Plumed Horse Restaurant, Saratoga, California): Medium bricking cherry red color with pale meniscus; brett, cinnamon, big red fruit nose; tart red fruit, cinnamon, rosehips and iron palate with high acidity; medium finish 90+ pts. (runner up for WOTF) (383 views)
Tasted by Richard Jennings on 11/26/2008 & rated 91 points: "Low-key" Pre-Thanksgiving Wine Dinner (The Plumed Horse Restaurant, Saratoga, California): Bricking medium red color with slight cloudiness and pale meniscus; dried spicy plum and brett nose; tart plum, rotten egg, iron and mineral palate; medium finish (323 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 2/4/2007: OC Kosta Browne Pay It Forward Offline (Sage in Newport Beach, CA): Having not tasted any of the 2001s previous to our event last night, was eager to try. I did not care for this wine. For one, it showed brett to me, tasted a little hot and sweet. Either a flawed bottle or just not my cup of tea but after two tastes, I dumped it out. (887 views)
Tasted by TheOtherPoster on 3/10/2006 & rated 93 points: My goodness! Opened about 1 hour before dinner, and a small bit was poured as a "chef's taste". Some lightening on the rim, and the wine has a nice, dark red color. The nose is complex; red fruits, pine forest, earth, and some baking spice. The wine put on weight over the course of the evening, and at about 2.5 hours out it had a wonderful, substantial mouthfeel along with well integrated acidity for lift and clarity. The palate is seamless and the finish was good if not spectacular. The palate delivered red fruits and underlying complexities I have trouble identifying. This was our only bottle, but I think that, all things considered, we opened it at a wonderful time in its development. I'd guess it will hold another few years. The effect of aging made this wine outstanding. (1134 views)

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
WineAmerica (National Association of American Wineries) | Free the Grapes!
California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
