(Stony Hill Chardonnay, Napa Valley) Stony Hill’s Chardonnay vineyard sits at an elevation of 600 feet, the vines range in age from 15 to 25, and the grapes are dry-farmed (that’s right, in Napa). This ’06 was fermented in 37-year-old barrels, and malolactic conversion was prevented. Light color; no way does it look like a 16 year old California Chardonnay. Nose is honeyed, mature, and has that “I’m a darn good very old Chardonnay” scent on swirling. While I think this wine has seen better days, it isn’t oxidized at all. I actually really like it. A lot. Good lemony acidity with custard creaminess. Good finish. Naturally, it’s the last (and best) bottle in the case. Then again, this bottle has been coddled since release— and for the last 10 years in a very large, very dark (rarely accessed dark room AND inside a sealed cardboard box), very consistent commercial wine cellar with thousands of bottles (not mine) keeping the temperature within about 0.5 degree Fahrenheit variance since release.

Falling apart. Madeira, too much acidity, thin fruit showing lemon lime custard, and a creamy edge. Best served over ice.

Medium-deep gold color. Nose is honey and stewed pears. Good acidity. Holding its own but definitely on the very mature side for chardonnay. Fruit is waning a bit but it’s still very drinkable. I tend to prefer chardonnay on the younger side.

Paired with a light dinner. Vibrant, refreshing Chardonnay. Nice minerality and acidity. Plenty of life left.

Unique CA chard. Very pale in color. No distinct nose. Almost like a Sauvignon blanc on the palate. Steely minerality in a nice way. Smooth and soft. Some peach and apple thrown in. Very nice.
