  • 2 hour decant, consumed over 2 hours and followed by a '95 insignia.

light-bodied, translucent, almost grenache-like. floral, feminine, and lacking any power i've experienced with other cayuse wines. honestly, ho hum and utterly beat down by the perfection of the '95 insignia. everyone pushed their second glass of this aside because it was so unremarkable. it's not bad, but i've had sub $30 syrahs from washington that were as good as this. maybe a poorly-stored bottle? it certainly wasn't corked. very disappointed. it's tough to score this with no price bias, but if scoring i'd say 88-90.

  • Dark raisin-like hue. Ripe, dark berry, white pepper, spicy, earthy nose. Full bodied, dark fruits, fennel, anise, and a huge finish. Remarkable finish.

  • Yet another perfect wine from Cayuse. Definitely at its peak but will last five or more years. Garnet, mostly opaque. The nose is immediate and powerful, of dark fruits, burnt wood, coffee, fennel. It's viscous and full-bodied, but much smoother and much more balanced than some of the tannic "fruit bombs". Flavors are dark fruits, roasted coffee, anise, very long aftertaste. I have tasted more perfect and near-perfect wines from Cayuse than from any other American winery.

  • Next time we will eat this with some bloody lamb chops. Did OK with turkey burgers but this wine is a compliment to great beef. Smoke, cedar, plum blueberry jam. Great color good nose and a front palate finish. Tasting again over the next hour or 2, OK. Wife says now is a dry finish. Definitely a food wine. Drinking on its own is OK.

  • Pop and poured. Smooth palate of plums, cherry, smoke, meat, florals, and freshly cracked black pepper. An interested light note of fresh tomato (not stewed) and mango to add a little lift. Nose of pepper, smoked meat, violets, veggies, and tobacco ash. Intense pepper on the finish. Impeccably balanced. Life left but singing right now. Washed down some meatloaf nicely.

(Cayuse Vineyards Armada Vineyard Syrah Bottle Sample Walla Walla Valley) Holy smokes! Full on black pepper along with violets and game on a nose that is significantly more evolved due to the extra year of bottle age. A persistent intensity on the palate with crazy game tastes. Rich without being fruity. 100% Syrah. 14.2% alcohol. To be released in 2010.
