  • Big Arcadian Tasting in ATL Part II, With Joe Davis (1998-2005); 10/15/2023-10/16/2023: Double magnum...just a tiny step down from the '98 next to it on table. A little rounder, feels it's age a wee bit more- but that beautiful aged pinot nose is there and such freshness on the palate. Burgundian. Splitting hairs if the '98 or '99 is better. Both amazing.

  • I know I planned to hold this longer, but with the recent spectacular performance of the 2001, I couldn't resist seeing if this had turned into something equally impressive. Unfortunately even with the benefit of the extra two years worth of age, it didn't hit those heights. Maybe the '01 is just the better wine. This is just as resolved, but not nearly as expressive, as defined, or as succulent.

  • Barely showing its age in color, on the palate bright red fruit and plenty of acidity. Quite refreshing and young tasting, with some back notes of bell pepper. No where near turning downward, but this is not likely to get better either.. on a plateau, but for how long?

  • Various recent posts on the 2005, some suggesting it would enter its prime drinking window in just a few short years, inspired me to open this bottle with a 6-year head start on the 2005 in the maturity clock. N.B., it's still young. In fact the first glass is consistent with the way bottlings of this show shortly after release -- rich and glossy with a primary, up-front sweetness. It keeps mellowing as it sits in the decanter, not in the sense that it lightens in density but rather that its proportions and shape are more streamlined and svelte. Moreso than most Arcadians this kind of reminds me of a youngish Calera. Still, by the standards of pinot noir, this is full-bodied. As I've commented before, I never understood the claim that Arcadian makes lighter-styled wines: the stylistic dichotomy is not light vs. heavy (as this is quite dense), it's whether the material feels vinous or candied. Here, notwithstanding its glossiness and richness, it's firmly on the vinous side. The fruit flavors have developed past the primary even if it has the gloss of a just-released wine, which gives it such a sheen that you can hardly feel any tannin at all. That certainly makes it accessible to drink, but we don't age wine just for accessability! This is just beginning to evolve and if I had more I'd want to wait another 5 years or more. All ye of itchy trigger fingers on the 2005, take note.
