Dark golden yellow. Distilled turnip liquor nose. Bright, hot but narrow energy. Finish, perfunctory. 02’s were austere & a challenge at 15 yrs but still had characteristic chenin fruit. Wine indeed, not flawed but not optimistic about remaining bottles.

This is my 5th (and last) bottle of this wine. I'll say it has not held up well to time. All of the bottles I've had over the last 5 years have been overly mature. By comparison the Baumard Papillon 2005 from screwcap that I've also been drinking has been fresh and lively and youthful. This bottle is not as bad as some. Showing baked apple, yogurt, wool, beeswax. Broad and mellow with a hint of lemon acid and fresh cut grass. Not great concentration, faded fruit. Nutty finish.

This bottle was really good and showing just a little bit of oxidation unlike the flabby and heavily oxidized bottles I've had recently from other vintages. I'm not sure what exactly has caused the tremendous variability of these wines (which seems to have hit this vintage as well judging from some of the notes below) but I think I'd rather take my chances with Huet and even Joly until I get comfortable that these high rates of severe premox are behind them.

(Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults Savennières Clos du Papillon) Light golden yellow color; tart apple, mineral, seafood broth nose; sherried, oxidative, mineral palate; medium finish
(Domaine du Closel Clos du Papillon Savennieres) #1; COLOR-very nice, almost urine-like medium to dark golden; NOSE-very distinct; can turn off a lot of people; complex and earthy, almost dirty; some straw; melted down licorice; some white flower as well; very interesting; PALATE-real intense acidity and dryness; a very aggressive and precise wine -- has an enormous amount of a cellar dust chalky minerality; baked apple follows from the nose; almost a pumpkin/squash element; crushed rock as well; I'm in love with this wine; outrageously complex; extremely well made; this wine is big time silky; great body structure; SPECTACULAR; a great value for the price point; GV-92+
(Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults Savennières Clos du Papillon) Carbonic, apple core nose; carbonic, open knit, tart apple and mineral palate; medium finish

Opened yesterday, see note. Today there’s chenin wool, petrol supported by bright sweet fruit. Finish is curt, unapologetic, businesslike.
