Deep garnet in color, the edges show the wine's age. Has started to develop a bit of old world funk on the nose, but is dominated by cedar, cocoa, and licorice with hints of plum still present. Palate is reflective of the nose, but comes off a bit hot. Tannins have completely mellowed out - this wine finishes smooth and supple, but with heat that seems out of balance. Not sure if this bottle has started to turn, but this wine is still a good drink for a smoother wine with a bit of old world elegance. Don't wait any more on this one.
Opened and allowed to breathe for 1h. Musty, berry nose, with alcohol. On the palate, red fruit (cherry mostly), with muted oak in the background. Tannins and acid are nicely balanced. Nice but not overly complex. A solid showing for burger night.
