  • Slo-oxed for 5 minutes, chilled. I never cease to be amazed, and pleased, by these long-aged German Rieslings. This wine was a bright, clear medium plus gold color. The nose was filled with peach and mandarin orange with no petrol. The medium plus bodied palate - which was quite smooth in the mouth - showed peach, pineapple, mandarin orange and some minerality. The acidity was up to the task of balancing all of this fruit, as well as the typical Spatlese RS.
This wine will continue to age for another 5 or more years - getting darker in color and developing a slightly different aroma/flavor profile - adding notes of honey and petrol (as some TNs have already noted), so drink at will.

  • Opened by Allred. 2nd time I have had this wine. From the excellent Scharzhofberger vineyard. Paired with pork wings in a sweet thai chili sauce. Light gold color. A little bit of petrol on the nose. Notes of caramelized pears, pineapple and other tropical fuits. Sweet finish. 92 points.

  • Annual Friendsgiving Gathering (M/M thelostverse): Served with pork "wings" tossed in a sweet Thai chili sauce-an excellent match. Deep color. Apricot and stone fruit; good weight and length through the finish. So very good.

  • In a perfect place in its evolution, this is eminently drinkable with secondary riesling notes and beginnings of petrol. A nice marmalade/apricot thing going on as well. For the 20-25 I paid for it over 10 years ago this was a steal! If you have it, drink now +2 years, as I believe it will start a decline from peak very soon.

  • Drank over 2 days and better on day two. Phenomenal mouthfeel and great acidity. It's got a tropical coconut pineapple thing going on. Plus some apricot. Went great with sushi. It's still very youthful and has a long life ahead of it.

(Von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese) #1; COLOR-golden; NOSE-great golden apple; Lipton tea bag; little pear as well; great nose; little peach fuzz action; PALATE-while not an over-the-top dessert wine, this is sweet; really great acidity coming through; very sharp pear meets apple flavor; very tropical (papaya & guava) on the mid-palate that really linger; I think Spectator went a little high; a gorgeous and vibrant Riesling; if you like apples and pears you're going to absolutely love this; AFTER CAP'N CRUNCH: may be the most hedonistic pairing ever; one of the great pairings; a great Sunday brunch idea; I give the Cap'n Crunch a 100 points; WS-95; GV-92
