Noticeably better this time. Softer than the '06, with some baking spice-type flavors complementing the big red fruit. An easygoing zinfandel, it lacks the structure and concentration of the '06 but still tastes good and doesn't cost much.

Ancient Peaks' 2006 zin is gorgeous, so when I found the '05 on clearance for $6.50 a bottle I bought several. This was the winery's first vintage, and from what I could tell winemaker Mike Sinor wasn't yet on board, so I wasn't surprised to find it didn't measure up to the '06. The balance seemed a bit out of whack, with a sharp streak of green oak undermining the bright red berry flavors. Still, this is great fruit for such an inexpensive wine, and at the price I'm glad I stocked up.

Very jammy and fruit-forward. Lots of mouth feel and developed flavors of blackberry. Paired well with grilled flank steak.
