  • Tobacco, smoke, citrus, hot stones, tar, leather, herbs, red berries, and hint of citrus crowd into the nose. On the palate, the wine is even better with its power, intensity, vibrancy, and depth, finishing with bright, red fruits, truffle, tar, smoke, and cedar. Drink from 2024-2045.

  • Alas, corked - we could have paid this more attention because it will still articulate on the palate.

  • Historically a lovely vintage for LMHB and tonight's bottle was very good if not as profound as it can be. I ranked it 2nd in our quartet of 61's (Haut Brion, La Mission HB, Palmer, and Trotanoy).

  • Blind tasting. This bottle came from the infamous Rudy's private cellar. We tasted together. We opened at 7pm and drank at 9:30pm. Did not decant. Lots of sediments. Excellent condition.

Orange rim, brick red color. Fully matured yet still powerful and energetic. Tertiary aromas on the nose and palate. Nectar, prune, dried apricot, cigar, cedar and spices. A liquid kaleidoscope. Very long finish.

Given proper cellaring, I believe this bottle would age for at least another two decades. The sweetness and concentration from 1961 vintage was definitely showing.

Was this bottle authentic or counterfeit? We blind tasted against a 1966 Chateau Latour, and some guests preferred this La Mission over the Latour. If this were indeed a fake, it would have proven the genius of owner. It was certainly one of the best clarets I have ever tasted.

  • Unlike the 1982 la mission, which was fruity and vibrant, the 1961 was leathery, subtle yet sophisticated. Absolutely love the 1961 more and enjoyed every sip of it.
