  (SCOTT PAUL La Paulee Pinot Noir) Oregon Pinot Noir Dear Friends, Ok, this deal was simply too good to pass up – the only caveat is that I have to put it out on a Sunday or we loose our shot at one of the best price/value examples of Pinot Noir you are likely to find. With all the hoopla over 2008 in Oregon, someone forgot to tell the more terroir-specific vintners in the Willamette Valley (such as Scott Paul) that 2007 wasn’t worth a darn – guess again. Just like 2009 in the Cote d’Or (versus 2007), my hunch is that many of you will prefer the less “sweet” and lower alcohol style of the top 2007s. While there are many wonderful Oregon wines in 2008, the elegance of the better 2007’s gives them an allure that is closer to the Old World. Case in point, today’s wine – an example that’s developed beautifully over the last year with a filigreed sense of itself that is missing in many 2008s. Yes, the 2008s have more volume, extract and oomph but do they have the mystery? While the La Paulee will not make you forget Lafarge, I can see the obvious thread of admiration in the style Scott Paul so wistfully embraces for the New World – light extraction, moderate oak use and an expression of vintage and varietal first. All of this adds up to a signature style that acts as a refreshing accompaniment to your evening meal, not as a replacement for dessert (one of the controversial attributes of 2008 in Oregon - far too much RS left in the wines). While the 2007s still have a touch of sweetness on the finish (just like 99.99% of all domestic examples of Pinot Noir), it is not an obtuse attribute. A perfect entrée to Scott Paul’s style is the 2007 La Paulee - a wine that screams Pinot Noir from the first whiff – there’s no mistake as to its varietal origin. With only 12.9-13.1% alcohol, the 20-25 year old Dundee Hills vines (old by Oregon standards) gave us a cool-toned bargain that will be deftly appreciated by many of our Burgundy enthusiasts...
