The oak seems to have integrated on this, much to my surprise. The nose shows red cherries, a horsey element, and something vegetal, but not at all unpleasant. Very light on the palate with no signs of the stinging oak tannins I noticed on my last bottle. Nothing special here, but not a bad Nuits St Georges.

Nose opens with nice sour cherry scents, which quickly mix with some oak spice that gives a nice complexity, but the fruit fades with a little while in the glass and some char/ash scents begin to dominate. Very little fruit in the mouth, but plenty of splintery oak tannin. Almost no acid, which yields a pretty flabby mouthfeel. Finish is muted by more oak. Not completely unpleasant on account of the nose, but there's not anything to be gained by waiting on this one. Disappointing.

This to my surprise was the best of my 2001 sampler pack purchased from North Berkeley. Not too oaky, nicely balanced, an enjoyable Nuits.

88 but there's good potential here; come back in at least 6 years.
