Done. This particular bottle was past it's time. It opened with a nice port like nose, no tannins and a very light floral taste. After a short time, it's age revealed itself and everything that is wonderful about Ridge was gone. I'm hoping it was just an issue with the storage.
Wow. Really good wine. Dark brick red in color. Kind of murky and not clear. Smells awesome! First thing I thought was that this wine smelled like port. Raisin and a current/blackberry reduction syrup on the nose. So much so, I thought this wine would be a sweet fruit bomb. Tasting the wine, I found that this was a very well balanced and a very well structured wine. Dark berries up front that gave way to one of the best finishes I have ever experienced. The dark berries transitioned to perfect juicy tannins and then to a tart raspberry jam to tobacco. This wine was light to medium bodied and didn't have a "creamy" mouth feel. After 2 hours of decanting, the wine seemed to lose its strength and became super mellow.
This wine was truly a revelation. It epitomizes aging gracefully, with inviting aromatics, deep, rich fruit enhanced by a generous mineral patina, smooth tannins and an overall structure conducive to even more time in the bottle. I was unsure what I'd uncover based on some of the prior reviews, but all my expectations were met and exceeded! I only wish I had more!!
