Bordeaux/Cabernet with Special Guest Lail (Orsay): My surprise of the night. Haven't had a lot of experience with this wine and the few I've had were more from the 90's at which point I think they might have lost some of the special sauce. This was drinking incredibly well. From a magnum. It has a lot of dark fruits and a bit more unctuous notes and generally just interesting.

Explosive aromas of minty plum and cherry fruit with underlying bell pepper and tobacco. Round, plush, sweet and juicy fruit belies the wines age. Timeless!

Old Cabernet Sauvignon. Still has Cab character and some tannin. Has softened and shows a touch of underlying sweetness. A little acidity on the tongue. An amazing survivor.

The wine was double decanted to serve. Nose initially showed autum leave, dirt, iron, earth and plum fruit. Although it was a thin in the first 45 mins, it was lifted by bright acidity. After an hour, the wine evolved into a deeper and richer aged napa. The sweetness emerged on the palate with some drying tannins. Long and expansive with complexity. 92-93

At close to 45 years of age, this still has its old school charm intact, with its tobacco, cedar wood, cassis and tart, red berry profile. Medium/full bodied, and with a bit too much tart over sweet fruit, with rustic tannins in the finish, it's still a fun look back at the old school, California Cabernet Sauvignon.
