Community Tasting Notes (2) Avg Score: 93 points

  • How is it that there is only one note on this wine? The first sentence on the back label is very apropos and reads “elegance and refinement have been the hallmarks of the Freemark Abbey cabernet sauvignon since 1967 when it first was made in Freemark Abbey’s historic Napa Valley winery.”

Opened and allowed to breathe in bottle for thirty minutes before it was double decanted off its sediment and served with 90-day dry aged Flannery KC strips and a mushroom ragu, this *is* elegant and refined.

Dark color, as many ‘91s still show, though there is some age showing at the meniscus. Aromas of red plum, cedar, violet, leather and raspberry, becoming more dark-fruited with air. There remains an abundance of fruit on the palate, plummy and dark, well-balanced and mature. Around two hours in leather and black fruit dominates the bouquet, with undercurrents of tobacco and cedar. The last sips, just over two hours after the cork was pulled, are every bit as delightful as the first.

Provenance is everything, of course, but well-stored bottles such as this will drink nicely for a few years yet. 93+ pts.
