Apr 2002 Robert Parker 91 Drink: 2003 - 2018 $114-$160 (100)
The medium to full-bodied 1999 La Mission Haut Brion is beautifully complex, with notes of cherry liqueur, plums, cigar smoke, fresh tobacco, and scorched earth. This deep, elegant, yet precise wine is cut from the same mold as the 1962, 1971, 1983, and 1985. Though not a heavyweight, it is gorgeously complex, supple, and both hedonistic and intellectual. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018

Tasted by skhemka on 9/27/2009 & rated 89 points: Aromas of black licorice, mineral and berries follow through to medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fruity finish (834 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 9/24/2009: Party Like It's 1999: A 10 year look back at 1999 Bordeaux (Public Restaurant, NYC): Smooth and silky with an acidic edge and a long finish. Bright, high toned with sweet tannins. B++ (931 views)

Tasted by dbkitc on 12/15/2008 & rated 87 points: Medium garnet / ruby all the way through. Lovely La Mission nose of wet tobacco, cassis and a bit of plum. Austere profile showing little sweetness. This is certainly a reserved claret – not really showing a lot right now – that tastes just like it smells. A bit hollow on the finish. Needs time, though I don’t think it will ever fully impress. Hopefully will mellow and harmonize but that is a question. (87+?) (1500 views)
Tasted by french16 on 9/8/2008 & rated 91 points: Nice, easy La Mission, entering its drinking window. Decanted for 1h, classic nose with smoky cassis, earthy and mineral notes and some light sweet oak mixed with cedar. Med body, good grip and structure, med tannin and acidity, it is a delicious, enjoyable La Mission.
Very good length.
Good now, I'll open my remaining ones in 3-4 years. (1612 views)
Tasted by dream on 4/24/2008 & rated 93 points: Medium-bodied with soft, smooth but serious tannins. Tons of delicious charred black fruits. Perfectly balanced and pssesses that incredible black oil mouthfeel that comes with some maturity in la Miss. Finishes with lovely richness and intensity and hints of gravel and smoke. Drinking well young but has plenty of stuffing to improve over time. An underrated vintage for this wine. 93+ (1996 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 4/15/2008 & rated 93 points: Wine and Food Society of New York annual BYOB (Steve Hanson's Primehouse, NYC): Drank very little- how much can nine people drink- I corked and took this bottle home. Put the nitrogen cylinder on it right away and drank four days later over the weekend. For a young wine it is complex and elegant. Cherries and plums mix with pencil, wood and cigar in this concentrated wine with sweet and supple tannins. (1948 views)
Tasted by jivey on 2/6/2008 & rated 93 points: BSW - Tasted alongside 98, 99, 00 and 03 - Unbelievably consistent nose across the board - Huge new world nose, tobacco, good tannin with a nice but one dimensional finish. If I had this by itself without the other vintages I probably would have went goo-goo. Very young yet ready to drink. (2101 views)
Tasted by facchair on 11/4/2007 & rated 90 points: Leathers/Reid Dinner Party - decanted 3 hours, medium bodied, light nose nice finish...will hold remaining bottles for a couple of years and should improve. (2329 views)
Tasted by Totatalitarian on 6/20/2007: Closed for quite some time even with air, eventually a nice mix of dark fruit and tobacco. A pretty nice wine but I am no rush to open any nor to run out and buy more. (1786 views)

Tasted by Anonymous on 9/19/2006 & rated 91 points: My first LMHB and not disappointed. Beautiful nose eminating from the bottle before pouring. Popped and poured into Reidel Vinum Cab Extreme stem. Dark translucent ruby color. Loads of dark fruit and cassis, with black cherries in the lead. Wall of tannin chocking back the fruit, but the fruit was very evident. Good follow through on the palate and finish. Give it at least 5 more years. This was my first, "trail" bottle, but there are still bottles left in the stores at reasonable prices. Will pick up a few more to hold. Classic Bordeaux at a song, compared to what is going on in todays bordeaux market. Could warrant high er score in time. (3093 views)

Château La Mission-Haut-Brion is the greatest Graves wine after Haut-Brion and in some vintages is considered the superior wine of the two. La Mission-Haut-Brion is situated just across the road from Haut-Brion in the commune of Talence in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. Since 1983, both properties have been under the same ownership, Domaine Clarence Dillon S.A. La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.
