  • I had not gone back to the several bottles of this I have in my cellar for a decade, having found it more austere than the lofty ratings it had received from James Laube would suggest. Well, after decanting a bottle tonight, I am very impressed with this 24-year-old wine! It has aged beautifully, retaining good color, with very enjoyable fruit and balanced tannins. I have a number of different wines from the 1990's and this is among the best in standing the test of time. I'm glad I was patient!

  • From my posting on Instagram:

In Vino Veritas (in wine there is truth; people speak the truth when they are drunk), bottle #149-154 of my cellar sacrifices. I put together a six bottle vertical of Viader, starting with 1995 and ending with 2000, with the help of Alan and Delia Viader in filling my vertical. A friend hosted an amazing dinner for the six of us which was outstanding! Great food and 11 other bottles brought by another couple, the Viader was poured during the main course. Needless to say, we planned ahead for Uber.

A brief background on Viader- Delia Viader was born in Argentina but the best then spent lots of time in France. She graduated with a PhD from Sarbonne and moved to California as the single mother of four. She asked her dad for a loan to buy the land. He thought she was crazy because he had already paid for her degree and now she wanted to be a “farmer”. Anyway, she went on to develop many firsts in Napa, with growing vertically instead of horizontally, mixing Cab Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon, and too many to list. She is respectfully known as the “Mother of wine”.

The tasting was a huge success and it seemed no one could agree on a favorite. To me, the 2000 was my fav. Thank you Alan and Delia Viader for making this happen as we all loved these wines! 🍷🍷🍷🍷👍👍👍👍 #wine #winelover #winelovers #redblend #redblendwine #viaderwinery #viader #alanviader #deliaviader #cabernetsauvignon #cabernetfranc #napawine #napa #napavalley #napacab

  • PnP in Sensory Coterno. Outstanding nose of umami, sous bois, mushroom. What one expects from a high quality aged bordeaux blend. Palate was very good, but did not match the nose. Nice secondary and tertiary flavors, but the umami note was less present, and the finish was medium/short. I would not say this is over the hill. It is possible the palate will develop to better match the nose, but hard for me to say that conclusively! Since this is my last bottle I will not likely find out!

  • Almost bordeaux on the nose - bark, leather - blueberry on palate showing high cab franc in blend. Clean, medium+ body, tannins well integrated now, medium finish - high acid (relatively low ABV 13.5%) - Howell Mountain/cool vintage? Very polished

  • Enjoyed with friends for a celebration of victory. All the 98s are now gone. Opened and poured. Cork was pristine, perhaps because this was from magnum? Velvet, neutral, smooth and silky, gains traction with age. Medium body. Nuanced, some tannin left. Reds with hints of secondaries. Some florals. Very nice for 22 years old. Purchased for $60 at auction, nice!
