  • Light translucent ruby in the glass; mature nose that is more about secondary/terciary scents than fruit - for lack of a better descriptive, it smells like Autumn, with undergrowth & decayed leaves.

Surprisingly vibrant acidity, red-fruited, decent persistence - actually fairly lively given the age of this wine. I am having Beef Bourguignon for dinner tonight, and this should be a great match for that dish.

  • A modest 1er reflecting the ripe 1990 vintage, but reflecting old style Faiveley more. Colour fairly deep ruby, losing colour around the edges. Pong on opening, lots of barnyard, is it brett or reduction? Probably, a bit of both as that feral element receded but remained over the evening. Under the funk are aromas of red fruits - particularly ripe plums and raspberries - bramble, underbrush, dry, dusty earth, pipe tobacco and some old dark spices. An impression of lush, ripe berry flavours on entry to the palate. Leaner, with more acids kicking in on the mid palate, with tart flavours of sour cherries, and initially funky on the back palate. With time open the barnyard flavours also receded, largely replaced by dry, savoury, earthy, woody, dark chocolate elements. Even with air, the acids are a little more prominent and the tannins a little more rustic than you would ideally like. This wine will drink in this style for at least the next five years, I would think. I probably overrate it because I find this old fashioned style Burgundy so charming.
