  • Did not decant. Blown away with the condition of wine structure, robust and layerd fruit pallet. Fininsh ran for 30 ➕ seconds. One left - will drink soon.

  • Back to the wine that started it all for me in Napa.

The first time I had a Merus was indeed the 2006 in September 2014 and afterwards, the floodgates opened. I probably had unrealistic expectations given the moment but it was time to open my last of the 2006 bottles.

On open, the cork was full of sediment, but the nose told me it was Merus and into a small decanter for 60 minutes.

On the nose lovely Asian spice, dark crushed berry notes with a hint of mineral and some unexpected graphite notes.

On the palate, it was far more restrained than the nose. The earth and mineral notes seemed more prominent than the fruit. Some black fruit, a hint of red fruit, and berry liquer notes. Frankly it was somewhat disappointing that the fruit notes were secondary especially given that the wind showed no signs of aging, and in fact, there was zero breaking on the edges.

With more time the fruit became muted, and while this is clearly a well made wine, tonight’s showing was disappointing — none of the usual black and red cherry and raspberry notes were apparent. I found my palate longing for the Merus I remembered not the one I was drinking. Tonite’s showing was at best a bit of a disappointment

The finish was shortish medium at best, and the high alcohol content shown through on the back of the palate as it was very boozy. I don’t think this gets better, a few years left, but not an ager—too much alcohol.

  • Another stellar Merus vintage. A slight step below 2004 and 2007, but that is splitting hairs. Still big and bold with plenty of time left. One hour slow ox, then drank over three hours. Bought on a second hand site and it was fine.

  • Great Father's Day wine with the boys and a filet with red wine reduction and mushrooms.....perfectly aged, needed only about 30 min if air to hit its stride. Color is still dark, fruit/acidity/tannins are all well integrated and playing off each other nicely. Faint plum/prune in the back round of the black fruit. Still rich but softened and drinking beautifully.
