  • This was really tasty. Decanted for 30 min or so. Poured red with an orange tint in the glass, some bricking. Slightly cloudy. Not a strong nose, but hints of black tea and raspberry. But much more red fruit on the palate, with some orange rind and prune. Maybe not as pure as I expected. But really good, resolved tannins - and held up and held its own in between a 2019 saxum white and a 2012 Darioush cab.

  • Chef Mirela hosts a spectacular dinner - with Todd/Jeff/Lori/Scott/Jill - Somm for the night (Mirela's, Weston, MA): First wine of the evening, from a magnum, in my cellar from about 2010...Cork crumbled on the way out, strained, mild sediment. Decanted about 2 hours prior to drinking. This was a good cadidate to pair with a nicely spiced Middle Eastern dinner

Notes from 2020: "Medium/dark purple color, slightly opaque. Amazing nose, dark berry, spices, garrigue, floral/violet...had to linger with the nose for a bit. Palate shows sweet raspberry, blackberry compote, cola(?), candied flower, underbrush, slight mineral..."

Notable on this tasting was the sweet raspberry, cinnamon and baking spices. Decant coaxed these out, it was really showing well. Crowd loved this wine, toss up on WOTN with a 2014 Saxum Broken Stones.

Last mag from this vintage. 2007 has its detractors as too modern/big. This one pulled off the balance of expressive fruits/spice while maintaining elegance. Well stored bottles still have a long drinking arc ahead of them

  • L oustalet in gigondas, lunch Time. Suggestion of the very capable sommelier. Pop and pour. Perfect pairing with the ravioli truffle dish. Deep ruby color. On the nose lots of Sweet pepper, chocolate, mint, caramel, dried black current, wet forest floor. Med acidity, full body, high alcohol, Med+ flavor intensity, dryish tannins, med finish. Beautiful dried fruits, minty milk chocolate, nice minerality. Very balanced and nice lingering finish. Simply excellent.

  • Drinking beautifully tonight. Red licorice and tar. Stewed raspberries and lots of herbs. Superfine tannins. No heat (surprising for the 2007 vintage). Good length.

  • Delicious- so much fruit still left in it, and so, so smooth. I’m not sure I’d have guessed that this was CNDP if given it blind (not necessarily a good thing!) - none of that trademark kirsch, and more black fruits than red/cherry. But absolutely delicious and brilliantly balanced, with easily 10/15+ years left in the tank.

(RESERVE Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf) Caillou et al Dear Friends, A few interesting new arrivals of note - all with impeccable provenance at intriguing prices. Quantities are too limited for individual offers but that does not detract from the exemplary quality of each wine. Have a great weekend - - Jon Rimmerman ******************************** 2007 Le Clos du Caillou CdR Villages "Les Quartz" EXTREMELY LIMITED/VERY HARD TO FIND Simply put, this wine is as good as many 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape's at a fraction of the price. Despite the Villages designation, at the winery they almost consider this to be an entry level example of Chateauneuf. 2007 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf du Pape "Reserve" The only reason this wine is still available at this point is because the wine market was expecting it to receive 99 or 100pts from Parker and, when it didn't, the interest level waned (a sad commentary on the wine trade in general - it's not like it received an 89. In addition, an IWC95 is not very common). I've tasted this wine on three different occasions from bottle and it is every bit as good or better than most of the top wines of the vintage. While quite open for a Reserve, this may have more to do with the 2007 vintage than anything else (the 1982 Bordeaux were quite open from the get-go as well). Down the road, 10-15 years from now, there will be a retrospective tasting of the 2007's and I will be surprised if this wine isn't among the very top examples of the vintage. If you are buying Chateauneuf du Pape to drink (or as an investment), this sultry and serious wine is a standout. It may not have the raw tannin of the 1998 or 2001 (like many 2007's) but it's magnetism is no less desirable. If we run out, I encourage you to find it elsewhere. Decant for at least 6-10 hours before serving (this wine cannot be judged on a single sip at a tasting - it evolves and morphs over the course of the evening and well into day two and three). As the years tick away and the 2007's begin to disappear, this wine has a chance to increase in value quite a bit. 2004 Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione The final parcel of this wine arrived a few days ago and they gave us 10 extra cases in error (that were supposed to be the new 2005 vintage - which is inferior to the 2004). Occasionally, mistakes actually work in our favor... Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone6110 Rhone6120 Italy4110

(Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve, Rhône Valley) In a vintage hailed by many, this is one of the wines to seek out. Lovely blackberry notes accent the ripe plum and dark-cherry aromas, mixed with some interesting mineral notes that give way to a full-bodied, richly textured palate. Concentration, balance, and structure make this wine wonderful now and certainly capable of long aging. Hot Picks
