  • Medium bodied and well balanced are not words I would expect to use for a Californian zinfandel, but that is exactly what this is.

Bought for 13 GBP in a bin-end sale and was curious to see what a 7 year old zinfandel might taste like. Colour is very light and showing signs of aging (light around the rim, a few deposits in the bottle). On the nose very sweet, notes of tar, liqourice, black fruit and some vegetation. Not at all overpowering. The flavour is less full bodied than I was expecting - very rich texture but medium bodied with a sweetness to the fruit. At first there seems to be very little flavour, but on the mid palate the sweetness comes through - the tannins are almost non existent. I think this wine needs to be drunk now. Overall a very good wine given my previous experiences of chewy, thick zinfandel.

Follow-up: 6 hours after opening this the smell and taste has evolved into a rich mixture of plums and deep sweet fruit. Will be buying more to be drunk in the next 2-3 months.

  • Tasted a second time. A simple wine with spice and pepper up front, ahead of very ripe red fruit. Softened fine. Pleasurable
