Sweet riesling! Be prepared. Nearly the consistency of a dessert wine. Caught a few off-guard as they were not expecting the sweetness. Medium body (as far as rieslings go). Long finish. Slight citrus (orange) and apple. Worth a try.
Drinking this wine at the Year End dinner at home tonight.
Theme for the night was German food and the spread we had included pork knuckles, sausages, mashed potatoes, garden salad, wedges, oxtail stew, chicken strogonoff and garlic bread.
This was the last wine to be served and we had it alongside grapes and blueberries.
Golden yellow in colour with a viscous, honey-like sweetness. The nectar nose is attractive and one of the things I like about German Rieslings is the aromatic nose and sweet sensations in palate without the taste of botrytis.
This wine 'wowed' the guests as most of them have never had a Auslese before. The sugar level, while ever-present, was not overpowering and allowed the fruit and structure to show beautifully.
This is an elegant wine to be consumed over the next 10 years.
Grand White Tasting (Private Residence): This Auslese is sweet with citrus aromas, minerals, beeswax, and acidity that creeps up as you taste the drink. It grows on you the more you taste since the aroma and the palate are so distinct. It is a playful wine that toys with your senses.
