A Memorable Saturday (Various Spots in the Santa Ynez Valley): From a magnum. A stunningly good Syrah, one of the best Truffiers I can recall having had. Layered, concentrated notes of sweet black fruit, fresh and powerful, with a glycerined purity and fine minerality that made this a joy to drink. The depth of flavor hear impressed me to no end, yet I could not detect any reduction, which i have seen in other of these wines.

The 2005 Clos des Truffiers has turned into a mature beauty. At first sniff, the nose exhibits massive and elegant fruit, wet saddle leather, fresh herbs, sun dried violets, flowers and lovely citrus zest. The palate follows through nicely with balanced and integration. Age has certainly helped the latter. Acidity is balanced and not overwhelming or intrusive. Worth mentioning is the cool elegance expressed in this effort, despite a high alcohol level. A lovely effort well worth seeking out if given the chance!

Coming across as a bit on the younger side, the 2005 Clos des Truffiers exhibits massive and elegant fruit, saddle leather, fresh herbs with thyme as the main component, violets, dried flowers and subtle orange zest. The palate is balanced, yet lacks a bit of integration tonight with a rather forward marching acidity, but balanced tannins. There is no doubt this is a very nice wine and I am most impressed by its intrinsic cool elegance, despite the rather high alcohol level. I am not sure the acidity will integrate further and I not even sure it is needed. I just think it is one hard edge to an otherwise completely velvety and silky experience. A magnificent effort! (score is 96+)
Tasted in a flight with 2005 Craggy Range Le Sol Syrah, 2005 Ojai Presidio Syrah, 2005 Torbreck Descendent and 2005 Clos des Truffiers.

In the nose overripe and rather alcoholic. But then, in the mouth, it's quite good. Very full aroma, racy, sharp, then after some moments it integrates all that stuff into a extreme wine. For sure this never could be my everyday wine. But as an alternative once or twice a year it's funny.

Close to perfection. Wonderfully complex, juicy, mineral, cool with layers and layers. And still a relatively young profile. 96-97+
