  • 4th of 12, hour decant, consistent good notes but tannin now absorbed and gone up a gear, med deep, plummy red, some development on rim, earth, damsons, quite gamey, some iron, classy, med full, long, expands in mouth, good grip, ready but will still improve. Fine plus (18/20).

  • 1998 Burgundy Grand Crus - Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Singapore, Chapitre de la Printemps (Harbour Grill, Hilton Hotel): Yet another good, but not great Charmes Chambertin. This flight was a bit of a let-down overall. Nose was the oakiest of the lot, with some winter melon scents and plenty of smoky spice. Plenty of strong fruit under all that though, and it showed on the palate as well. Very fleshy I thought, with deep fruit flavours - dark cherries shading into red fruit - some meaty, roast chicken notes, lots of spice, and some fragrant wilted flowers. Quite a charming Charmes, but perhaps just a tad simple. Finish was decent - pretty longish, some more oaky, melony notes and more cherries. All in all, a rather nice, yummy wine, just not quite something to shout about.

  • Soft, smooth and silky with ripe flavours of strawberry and raspberry and a touch of mint; very elegant and long, this is Burgundy at its best and perfect to drink now. 1998 has produced some very good wines, although they have taken time to evolve.

  • On the occasion of Max and Debbie's visit, which Scott accompanied perfectly with wild salmon with a porcini mushroom and thyme sauce. The color was a very fresh deep, opaque purple. The nose was initially black fruits and a little bit of spice, but after an hour or two in the glass, the black fruits were joined by some notes of raspberry and violet, and the spice by a more forward black pepper aroma. The finish had a very appealing mineral note. There was still a strong tannic backbone, but mellow enough to allow pleasurable drinking . Beautiful balance. I think this wine has entered a lovely drinking window, but we will be in no rush to drink the remaining bottles.
