Retail $125(?). Responsible Bottle (). Under cork. I bought this online a while ago (at the end of 2008) and I have held onto it until now. A dear friend from France was in town and this seemed appropriate. And it was. Surprisingly fresh on the palate with blackberry and cassis, a touch of anise, and a bunch of mint. The palate? Holy cow. While certainly more of a New World style, this is loaded with fruit, there is still that classic Burgundian earthiness and more than a hint of tannins on the backend. Whoa. While we still have several months to go, this might be the top Burgundy of the year?
{Corton Clos des Corton tasting organized by JL at Black Cat} Complex aromatics with diverse attractive scents and some barnyard, deep fruit with iron and minerals, some earthiness but not at the level of Gevrey Chambertin. Not a gourmand wine of easy pleasure, somewhat challenging as well as rewarding. Still tough. Rated 90-91 at various times. Decanted at 3 pm, tasted ~ 7 pm in first flight of Clos des Cortons.

(Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley) Very dark cherry red color; nice cherry, caramel oak, chocolate nose; tight, tart cherry, mineral palate with firm tannins; medium-plus finish 91+ pts.
(Faiveley Clos de Cortons) Animalistic, mushroomy aromas lurk on the nose, followed by black cherry, coffee, and toffee on the long, long finish. Not for the faint of heart. Appellation: Corton
(Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley) Dark cherry red color with pale meniscus; tight, tart red fruit, oak nose; tight, tart cherry, mineral, oak palate, structured but needs at least another 3 years or more; medium-plus finish 91+ pts.

!998 Red Burgundy-Two Cortons (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Tasted with Mike, nose of earth and iron, same on the palate, rustic, crisper, and better finish but lacked depth, big body, and long, long finish.
