This was open for business immediately, showing a broad, bright nose including a curious sardine note as well as some cranberries, wet fur and creosote. There is fantastic interplay between the delicious, delicate berries on the attack and the more earthy, truffley tones on the midpalate. Texturally elegant and supple but tightened by the presence of persistent acid. The density and potential is there for this to relax and improve further still through to 2020. On the thorny subject of decanting: whilst the nose lost a little bit of its charm and focus after 5 hours open, it undoubtedly helped the palate to soften up and shed some of its tightness. I might double decant the next bottle 1/2 hour before dinner (or breakfast; delete where appropriate).
