  • Year end dinner at Jade Palace. Second red in a flight of 4. Drank alongside the Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes. Bricking throughout, like the MG, this looked aged. Aromatics on this was aged Chambolle like with dried roses, sweetened strawberries and cherries. There was some barnyard and dirt on the nose with extended time. This was actually the exact opposite of the MG. I'm beginning to agree Roumiers really need a minimum of 25-30 years. The palate was showing fine as well, with just about enough fruit - sour cherries, plums and raspberry jam, but there were certainly more secondary characteristics like herbs, earth, wood, smoked meat and tree bark. The finish just seemed a little hollow, and lacked the complexity and length. Nevertheless, one of the more impressive Roumiers I've had and certainly in a perfect (if slightly slightly over) drinking window.

  • Even though it lacked the real complexity you would expect from Ruchottes, this bottle showed a beautiful elegance and balance. Pure and vibrant pinot fruit with roses, smoke and a touch of earthy notes. Drying tannins on the finish so drink up, I doubt this will improve anymore.
Even in a difficult vintage, I really love Roumier style where nothing is ever forced.
