Dark colour. Nose of mandarin, charcoal, and vanilla, with funky notes of scrambled egg and sherry. Palate is full-bodied, rich, and sweet, with flavours of mandarin and honey, a strong oxidised note of amontillado sherry, and a hint of cocoa. The structure is excellent, with the powerful sweetness balanced by powerful acidity (the finish is not at all cloying). Fairly consistent with my previous note, though this bottle was probably a bit more oxidised.
Chocolate brown, with red and yellow tints. Bold nose, with maple syrup, sourdough, pineapple and a hint of coffee. The palate is huge, with opulent sweetness. The entry brings a huge gobful of sweet pineapple and honey, with hints of truffle and chocolate mousse. Though it's initially obscured by the sweetness, there's a strong thread of acidity, and the finish leaves a long-lasting sensation of lemon sorbet.
V64 Wine night (Guildford, Perth, WA): The colour was a magnificent rich dark golden hue. The nose was full and fruity, promising a lush and mouthfilling palate. This was delivered with a wonderful sweetness that was balanced by acid and a length that was remarkable. There were citrus, toffee and lychee flavours with toasty oak undertones that were beautifully integrated. It was drinking extremely well now but it will last and continue to improve and change for many more years to come.
