opaque ruby. Aromas are pure graphite/ground up rock, tar. Bright blackberry compote working through to cherry and chewy tannin with bright acid and moderate length. Transitioned to layered black and blue fruits with greater depth on second day

Supper in the country (Axel's place, near Exeter): Blackberry, black pepper, slight cream and vanilla. The fruit is a little sour and there are thick, dense tannins in the mouth. There is a little black pepper and some alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay

Supper matches (My place, Kent Street): blackberry, pretty berry notes, slight dish wash water, sweet liquorice with charred stalks and fresh pink peppercorns. Exceedingly juicy acidity, fresh ripe black fruits. Tannins are near fully resolved; just a little burring on the palate and the wine remains rich, though savoury. Nice

Nice nose, with ripe strawberry and blackberry syrah aromas, light wormwood, bitter almond, dark chocolate and wood spice. Smooth entry on the palate, with polished mouthfeel yet astringent tannins. An excellent food companion, but after the meal is finished, oak and bitter chocolate gets more prominent. Hard to tell whether to keep or not, but we'd like to work on the bitterness and the fruit seems to have the stuffing for another three to five.

Cork was stained about 75% of the way up. Not a good start.
Very little on the nose. Hint of jubes perhaps. Palate was just full of tannins and nothing else. Clearly oxidised. Damn corks! When will the French learn and use screw caps?!?

(Domaine Belle Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle) Dark black cherry red color; nice smoky ripe plum, graphite and berry nose; tight but well-structured smoke and sweet black fruit palate with depth; long finish 91+ pts.
