Serious Burgundy night: Brought for a friend. Slightly cloudy in colour but showed correctly for its age otherwise. Resolutely old-school Gevrey with savoury iron notes and chewy tannins. Had a hint of delicate red fruit but the newer style is more attractive.

Notes on Wines from December 2021 (Wellington, NZ): My wine decanted several hours before serving double blind. The same descriptors as in my last note a few months ago. Polished black berry and cherry fruit, earth and iron. Tight, leaner and structured with 2007 acidity. An excellent Grand Cru but still a little backward (for a supposedly lighter vintage) with serious tannins to integrate and resolve. (Some tasters however thought the Clos de Bèze was over-oaked). I (again) enjoyed it on the night but I’d recommend a hold until 2025+.

Some BYO Wines at Noble Rot, Wellington: Brief note of a wine I served double blind to friends. Dark colour. Classic, serious Gevrey Grand Cru bouquet. Dark spices, grilled smoky meats, damp peaty soil, black fruit and wet iron. In the mouth, serious, dense and hugely powerful. Earthy with mushrooms, black cherries and blackberries. Iron at its core. Still relatively closed and tannic - give it 3+ more years. Grungy with bright acidity. Great with my beef dish.

Tasted semiblind vs Chambolle Fuees from 2009 Perrot Minot and 2011 Grivot Boudots and 2014 Etude Heirloom. Gave this no more than 1 1/2 hours but it may have needed more. The first impression was very dusty and I put it down as flawed but it did improve. Lean, a tad green, earthy Gevrey character. . No problem detecting it among the other three. Nowhere near other vintages from B Clair Clos de Beze and not as good as the previous bottle. Will have to try it again with more air.
