  • What a pleasure to enjoy the last glass of my singleton 1934 Château Lafaurie Peyraguey. The pleasure time was a little over one hour. (Uncorked on December 25th last year. It has been stored under a cork, without any argon gas.)

This chateau, with a history dating back to the 13th century, has in recent years become a significant favorite for my palate. I have greatly enjoyed the 2001, 1975, and 1962 vintages. It's easy to understand why the English considered this estate a strategic point during the Hundred Years' War. That's history. Today, its significance lies in a strategy based on pleasure.

The wine presents a dark amber color.

Divine aromas of botrytis, curry, a slight oxidation (reminiscent of Oloroso), exquisite fruit, and floral notes fly out of the glass. There's an enormous firework display of integrated aromas and nuances that rush by, challenging to describe in words. The richness is magical.

In the mouth, this wine continues to expand in every corner. The sweetness is subtle, the acids perfect, and the length of the wine is, well, almost as vast as the Universe. Everything is in place. Each tiny drop performs pirouettes in the mouth. This is so delightful that it almost brings tears of joy.

To be honest, I was expecting a thin, acidic, old wine with a strong lean towards Oloroso. But this is as lively as an athletic Olympian. There are no signs of decline or fatigue. It will probably maintain its form well for another 90 years.

This wine, I would happily drink loads more of!

  • Dark amber with a brilliant lustre.
The nose has now, finally, come around as a pure-fruited Botrytis charachter from a superior vintage.

The palate remains endlessly beautiful. It has everything you'd expect from a great Sauternes: superior length, complexity and the complete sense of undying passion. I'm not sure this wine will ever die… The beautiful standard components of honey, citrus and botrytis are intense and extraordinarily sensitive. Tonight, the toffee, milk chocolate and its rich spectrum of spicy characters, left me silent and spellbound. And there were more character to this wine than my feeble words can describe.

For those lucky Lucky LUCKY persons still stashed with this absolute gem, no need to hurry. Will probably deliver exceptional love also 100 years from now… Mega WOW!
    Mjuff!

  • Dark amber with a brilliant lustre.
The nose is "broken", but the palate is endlessly beautiful.
It has everything you'd expect from a great Sauternes, including honey, citrus and botrytis. It also has toffee, milk chocolate and a rich spectrum of spicy characters, including liquorice. And more!

Cork came out in three pieces, soaked with many deposits. The first two small glasses of this elixir were poured into a small PET bottle and brought to the restaurant.

It took me a bit of thinking to reward this wine with 💯 points, as the nose is wanting. But, just like cheese, not all things are meant to smell well. If given the choice, I'd always prefer the wine that tastes well rather than smells well...
