  • Uncorked overnight upon serving into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root” day): Pale bright ruby to the eyes, great colours here. Only very fine deposits in liquid and chunk ones at the bottom of bottle.

Initial sniff reminds of the high toned but darker red berry and cherry fruits not dissimilar to the 1961 Cantina Mascarello Riserva tasted, but this has even more intensely scented with also saline minerality, earthy and subtle hints of animale notes.

Judging on nose this is already hard to not be at least 94-95 points. Reserved for detailed tasting notes.

Second round: super savoury and very highly mineral and acidic indeed. 95-96 points.

  • The '71 Rinaldi is a very intriguing and enjoyable wine. On the nose, I found a captivating and dark expression, with rich dark red cherry fruit, orange peel, sweet spices, licorice, mint, and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine was incredibly rich and enveloping for a wine of its age, showing ripe dark red fruit, orange, and sweet spices, along with some smoky, savory tones towards the finish, with was long and showcased a myriad of flavors including brown and balsamic spices, orange, and smoke. The texture is perfectly seamless and silky from beginning to end, with the tannins being fully integrated.

  • Earthy cheery, raisen and licorice; balanced; very complex; concentrated and youthful; long elegant cherry-licorice finish.

  • This wine had a lot of volatile acids and smelled very skunky upon decanting. It took over 4 hours to resolve but then was very nice. Hints of tar, wet earth, leather, and flowers. A subtle core of cherry and mineral flavors with a very long finish. If you are going to serve this wine decant it a minimum of 3 to 4 hours in advance. It was just hitting it's stride when we finished it.
