Despite the much higher alcohol than the 96 (13% vs 14.5%), this is a more lively expression of this block. There are more savoury characteristics in the 96 and a slight bit more length, but overall the 98 fuller middle and quite satisfying. 2 different vintages. Good fun and both delicious.
Poor cork quality in both cases though.
Drink or hold, no upside anticipated. Delicious right now. 14.5% abv

Drink up my last bottle of 1998 and was pleased that the wine holding better than my previous bottle. Dark ruby with brick red hue and transparent rims. Pop and pour and the wine is showing well. Nose of dark fruits, blackberry, black cherry, spice, hints of mint and leather. Fruits holding well after 16 years , exhibits nice ripe fruits, dark plum, black cherry, spice and pepper. Mellow down and showing medium bodied, fruits and acidity are holding well. It is still the richest and biggest among 1997 to 2000 with more ripe fruits and higher alcohol (14.5%). Sweet and soft chewy tannins, lingering peppery finish with hints of leather as well.

Mini Astralis vertical vs. Kaesler & Penfolds St Henri (New Ubin Seafood): Showing nose of leather, blackberry, red fruits and spice. It has mellow down and drinking nicely, with palate showing blackberry, leather, earth and lots of secondary notes and nicely developed. Fine tannins and long finish. This wine seems to get softer and develop, should be drunk within this few years.

Still holding well. Blackberry nose, slightly sweet on the palate but no loss of colour or tannins - brilliant for its age

Bright, and drinking well. I prefer the palate of this wine compared to the aroma. Melted tannins with a tinge of stem.
Spiced fruits, leaves, roasted wood aroma. The aroma seemed a bit faint, perhaps signs of fading or entering a resting phase….
A very enjoyable aged Shiraz.
