Dark golden brown; complex nose of very ripe tropical fruits, apricots, pears, and of course honey along with a light touch of acetone. The finish is medium-long with honeyed caramel, peaches, and ripe apricots; smooth. Good way to cap a night after dinner at the Buckhorn Exchange.
My 40th at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Half. After a good and an excellent half of this, this one was spoilt by a huge dose of VA-like acetone. With vigorous aeration it did start to lift from the nose a bit, but the palate was still painfully acidic and completely unrepresentative of previous halves.
Half bottle. Good colour, lovely nose, all marmelade, a touch of botrytis and a hint of caramel. Sweet and smooth attack, beautfully balanced by fresh acidity. Good weight, medium sweetness. Long. Really lovely and excellent for a half of 73. Significantly better (especially in the balance) than previous half of this. ****1/2
Half bottle. Good colour, holding up well, still reasonably sweet and vigorous, though obviously not as bright as the full bottle of 88 alongside. Pineapple fruit has given way to orange and marmelade, but the structure is good and it finishes resaonably positively. ***1/2
