Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 7 notes)

Tasted by Calistoga on 2/2/2007 & rated 89 points: Dark red. Rich ripe blackberry fruit on the nose with a little green herbal influence. Dark plummy fruits and cherry in the mouth with a hint of tobacco starting to have some influence. Smooth polished texture with moderate tannic structure. med finish. Seems different than the wine I remember drinking in my last note. This was my last bottle but I don't think I would have waited much longer if I had had any others. (851 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/17/2006: Some herrbs on the nose then licorice. Some licorice and maybe a little light chocolate on the palate 92 pts-cld (976 views)
Tasted by win on 10/14/2006 & rated 88 points: Blind Birthday Tasting (Win's House - Texas): Good wine, just a bit nondescript in the lineup. (Hurricanes) (1599 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/14/2006 & rated 87 points: win's 40th Birthday Party (win's house in The Colony, TX): WIML87,WA87,WS91

Tasted October 14, 2006 at win’s 40th birthday party. Served blind in a Riedel restaurant series Bordeaux wine glass. Bag labeled as “Hurricanes”. Garnet color in the glass, slightly dusty throughout. Nose was a little green with a heavy balsamic aroma I found unappealing. Flavors of blackberries and plums with yet more unappealing mint on the palate. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Balance is OK but not an enjoyable wine sensory wise. Unfortunately, I know this wine. It is definitely the 1997 Byington Cabernet Sauvignon Bates Ranch. I brought it. Fortunately, it was my last bottle. (1574 views)
Tasted by WStucker on 7/21/2006 & rated 91 points: Very tasty bottle. Great Cali Cab fruit from the outset, very fine sediment. Dark fruit, currants and a little spice at the end. Medium body. Very enjoyable, exceptional for the price I paid for it 7 or 8 years ago. Poured 1/2 into a 375 at the first, the rest did start to fade a little after 3 hours in the decantur. Now having the other half. Still very young. Yummy! (1092 views)
Tasted by davetong on 11/26/2005 & rated 92 points: I don't know why Byington is such an underrated producer. This was an excellent wine; deliciously fruity right from the outset and held on for over two hours to the last drop showing no sign of fading. The tannins were soft and well integrated. This wine is at its peak right now and though I don't see how it can improve further it will certainly hold for a few years yet.
I see another user picked some up very recently - I wish I could get more of this. If you know where it is available shoot me an email - scarabus@gmail.com (2114 views)
Tasted by Calistoga on 11/13/2005 & rated 88 points: Deep red though the center is less purple than I remember. Muted nose of something like cherry and maybe a little something like smoke as it warms. Berry and black cherry flavours with a soft smooth texture. One of the reviews mentioned tea which might still be accurate. Tannins are softer than a couple years ago with a slight astringency after a glass or two. Flavours are bright and relatively simple without alot of secondary development. Finish is med-short with a slight antiseptic touch. (1298 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
