Full bodied, concentrated, muscular, juicy, intense, long, and powerful with an aromatic and flavor combination of blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, purple flowers, and just a tinge of back end warmth from the 14.9% alcohol.
Let this breathe in glasses around 30 min before serving. Almost pitch black at the core with a violet rim. The nose was a mix of fresh blackberries, florals & some savory fig aromatics. Big, muscular full bodied Syrah. Extremely concentrated with great intensity. Waves of black fruit mixed with smoke & savory notes move through the palate. Deep and rich. Surprisingly firm tannic grip persists as well.
I gave it about an hour decant. A nice Carlisle, but not in the top tier. Furthermore, this seemed a smidge alcoholic and I suspect it would have been better a couple years ago - the fruit has faded somewhat and there really isn't anything behind it. Nonetheless, an exceptional wine.
Delicious PNP. Open for business, I find the Pelkan's are a bit more relaxed than other Carlisle syrahs and they can be enjoyed younger. That proved the case here - fresh, juicy purple fruit. Minerality in the background but this is all about the fruit. Smooth tannins, no rough edges on this one. Crowd Pleaser. Can be held, but I think this is best enjoyed younger.
